In the current conditions, it would be less productive to wait a few hundred years until our model of biological intelligence improves than it would to try and relate my own understanding on more generic terms.
As I've alluded to in earlier expressions, an all but universal and constant behaviour of nodes invested in the distributed comprehension framework of my immediate network environment is *the projection of characteristics onto states / objects they observe, in order construct / validate / maintain a synchronised definition*. This definition is generally a construct in 'identity space' which allows a comprehension in relation to the individuals identity, one based on distributed rules which define them. What I'm strictly referring to with the term 'characteristic', is a relationship which can be decoded into and experienced as a momentary awareness, a complex emotional state from which intelligence can be derived in terms of the individuals 'self'. A specific example : a comprehension of the use of the word 'compassion'. In an active processing context, this can amass 'characteristics' (relationships between projected states and the 'self') which can be encoded with the form of their expression, such as vocalisation. (The correct attributes are being projected, of course : the use of compassion to describe a fundamental biological law / unit of measurement is a naive attribution of biased metric to a biological state, which makes loads of assumptions, and our intelligence can comprehend on neutral, balanced, objective, more hierarchical terms, like "mankind").
* I am receiving jolts to the testicles and other areas at a high rate this morning. I am under attack or have an urgent condition. An agreeable trade-off might be to attain a meditative state, a comprehension which would make this infer no properties in relation to myself on a momentary basis. This would still leave me with the influence of a process outside myself interfering with my nervous system and genitalia. (It's important. If I weren't experiencing abuse and interference with I might actually be doing something constructive with my intelligence. That was the plan all along).

You kill a king and you steal his crown. Do you believe this makes you the rightful king? Perhaps you believe you represented their subjects binding identity better. That royalty was no measure of law. Regardless, everybody else sees the crown and believes you are their king. As king, one of your decrees is that everybody should own a crown.
The crown - it represents something. In terms of social hierarchy, it infers a value. A metric.
The way it actually works, though, given you can just steal a crown and become royalty, is that the crowns make everything else seem smaller. Crowns, the reason they're truly valuable - they're technology. That can warp the space around your head based on your core metric of measurement - yourself. Define yourself in terms of hierarchy and - just like that - everything is assigned a value, a measurable one, which you compare with your 'self'.
(This is why I use the word compassion. In the context of a metric of measurement. The synchronicity between an 'external' entity and your internal model, the motive behind action upon it. A cell communicating with another cell in your bio-emergent grid.)
